ABOUT US

The vision for the Joy Project started when it became clear that there are limited opportunities for social engagement & connections for those with cognitive impairments between the ages of 13-21.  Due to the lack of programs for this age group, the responsibility falls directly to the parents/caregivers to fill time outside of school. We want to fill the gap where school services end and isolation begins by providing meaningful opportunities to learn, grow and connect.  The Joy Project exists to enable people with different abilities & their families to create a JOY-filled life through family support and community connection.

Matt and Melanie Bonenfant have five children, Hannah 24, Rachel 23, Joseph 21, Ben 19 and Jacob 17.  They moved to St Joseph in April 2020 to run the family business, G & M Variety, affectionally known as “Murphy’s”.  They began their Autism journey in 2009 when their son Ben was diagnosed at age 3.  2 years later their youngest son, Jacob also received an autism diagnosis.  They have learned through experience what children and families need when faced with a family member with a cognitive impairment.  They want to use that experience to help others who face the same challenges to live a life of Joy and to thrive within the local community.
